ACKNOWLEDGING THE LEGACY OF THE LAND WE INHABIT

PlayGround-NY acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Munsee Lanape, the original inhabitants of the territory colonially known as the five burroughs of New York City. As the past and present Indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with their traditions, the Munsee Lanape have never ceded, lost, nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their traditional territory. BIOGRAPHIES

PLAYWRIGHTS

CLAIRE ABRAMOVITZ (Mercy as a Mother on a Child), she/they, is an emerging playwright living and working in New York City. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English, Theatre, and Jewish Studies from Oberlin College. Her play To Rot in His Bones was a semifinalist in the 2021 Jewish Plays Project Annual Jewish Playwriting Contest. In her spare time, she writes poetry, song parodies, jokes, keeps a list of fake band names, and makes soup for at least thirty. Her dream is to open a soup restaurant/comedy club.

TODD CERVERIS (Lately), he/him, a professional actor for over 30 years, Todd’s play, PROVENANCE, was the Vermont state winner in Portland Stage’s Clauder New England Playwrights Competition. His solo play LET ME SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU won best storytelling at the United Solo Festival in New York. His screenplay FOUR DAYS FROM BETHANY took second place at the Big Bear Lake International Screenplay Festival. And his collaboration with Caridad Svich and Nick Philippou, THE BOOTH VARIATIONS, was a Fringe First nominee at the Edinburgh Fringe.

BRAM HARTMANN (I Want to See the Sun Again) he/him, is a New York-based writer. Bram studied playwriting at The Actors Studio. He lives in Hell’s Kitchen with his fiancé and cat. @bramhwriter on X.

STANLEY HATHAWAY (The Legacy of the Land We Inhabit), he/him, is originally from New York City. I was raised in New York City. I was educated in New York City. I’ve taken Playwriting Classes at HB Studio, and Primary Stages. I’ve been writing plays for some time now. I’ve written a number of One-act plays, and a few Full length plays.

BAILEY JORDAN GARCIA  (@RudyMocha has Entered the Chatroom) they/them, is a non-binary playwright located in NYC. They’ve worked with places such as The Blank (“Pedo Punchers”), Cry Havoc (“We Heart Christopher H. Mahoney…”), The Bechdel Group (“Tvilah”), Ohio University (“An Abstinent Orgy”), PlayGround-NY & PlayGround-LA (produced x12), and many others! Currently, Bailey is in a residency with PlayGround-One, working on their full-length entitled “Crazy Jezebels”. DANIELLE E. MOORE (These White Men Are Dangerous), she/her, is an NYC-based writer/producer who has developed content for companies including NBCUniversal and The Shubert Organization. Select theater credits include Audrey Hepburn biomusical Audrey (Bold New Women’s Musical Voices 2020 Selection), CROSSOVER (Illuminate the Arts Grant Recipient; Philadelphia Inquirer’s “Theater to See This Week”). Awards: University of Pennsylvania 2018 Office of the Provost Year of Innovation Grant for the revisionist musical adaptation GATSBY; 2014 PURM Fellowship; Finalist, 2021 Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project; 2023 Maestra Mentee. ACTORS

JEN ANAYA  (Mercy as a Mother on a Child, “Hagar”), they/ them, is a queer Indigenous Mexican theater/music/art/ritual space maker, doula, and energy healer raised on Yavapaiv Apache, Cocopah, and O’odham land. From La Mama to Harvard Art Lab, The Kitchen to Radio City Music Hall, the mountains of Greece to Harpa in Iceland, Jen has been weaving music, theater, art, movement, and healing together for 15 years. A founding member of Constellation Chor, contributor to You Are Here Creations, and 2021 FORGE Fellow, Jen tends to their healing arts practice De Luz Healing, and loves to kick it with the youth at the 52nd St. Project. www.jenanaya.com

KATIE HARDEN (These White Men Are Dangerous, “Mika”), she/her, started show business at the tender age of seven. She modeled for Sears department stores and grew up around musical theater. Katie was blessed to play The Narrator in Joseph at The Academy of Performing Arts, directed by Mark Wilson (BWay/Nat tour: Hair.) She made her Off-Broadway debut in a comedy variety show as well as performed in As You Like It as a supporting role at The Player’s Theatre. Katie originated the role of ‘Katie Winters’ with Seven Angels Theatre and also was in the top 25 at Don’t Tell Mama’s Next Big Act. She has been seen in multiple productions and NYC cabarets and interviews celebrities for her online magazine, Lorette. Also was a guest singer at the Wesleyan University ‘Future Broadway Star’, The Wadsworth, Xfinity Center, The Bushnell, and the Orion Capital to name a few. Selected regional roles: Nancy in Oliver, Maisie in The Boyfriend. Ellie May Shipley in Show Boat, Betty Rizzo in Grease, and Kate Mullins in Titanic. Katie is a proud member of AEA and thanks her parents and her rep The Talent Express for putting up with her. Love to my mom, dad, Evelyn, Ana, and Lorna.

SHARLENE HARTMAN (I Want to See the Sun Again, “Molly”), she/her, has been acting, singing, dancing, writing & directing for most of her life. It started out in San Francisco, with a broken collarbone and a lisp. Her credits include: Off-Broadway, Indie Films, Television, Live Industrials, Nightclubs, Commercials, Voice Acting, Skit Comedy, and Rap Songs. But her heart truly belongs to the theatre. However, most recently she’s been having a love affair with film. Her latest, LUNCH WITH LESLIE, is currently in festivals, receiving numerous awards. She loves creating a character.

AMBER JESSIE (The Legacy of the Land We Inhabit, “Blythe Freeman”), is a NYC actress, honing her craft for two years at the William Esper Studio. Her most recent role was Assata in the compelling play “Anytown USofA” directed by Jonathan Travis. Grateful to contribute her talent, Amber is thrilled to be part of “The Legacy of the Land We Inhabit,” continuing to explore the rich tapestry of storytelling through her art.

 

KYLIE LAVRENCHIK (@RudyMocha has Entered the Chatroom, “Betsy”), she/her, is an artist and activist dedicated to sparking conversation and awareness about body image issues and the harm they have in the theatre community. She is a proud 2022 graduate of NYU Tisch with a BFA in Drama.

 

JULLY LEE (@RudyMocha has Entered the Chat, “Concierge 1”), she/her, is an Ovation-nominated actor and the Artistic Director of COLD TOFU IMPROV, the nation’s first and longest-running Asian American comedy troupe. Jully made her Broadway debut in KPOP the Musical, and was recently in HELLO KITTY MUST DIE at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this past summer. Jully has received critical acclaim for her performances in over 30 productions onstage and was nominated for Good Morning America’s Inspiration List: “Who is Making Asian American Pacific Islander History in 2021.” Next week, she will be headed to La Jolla Playhouse for the workshop presentation of MCNEAL by Ayad Akhtar. jullylee.com

KIRBY MASON (The Legacy of the Land We Inhabit, “Parker Harris”), she/her, is an AEA member and graduate of Temple University with a BA in Theater Arts. Amongst her acting career she sits on the Executive Board of the Apollo Theater’s Education Advisory Committee; designing curriculum and continuing education opportunities for theater artists and educators around the world. She has worked off and onstage in theaters across the East Coast. Her favorite roles include the 2023 Broadway World nominated role of Matilda “Tillie” Binks ( Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Rheba (You Can’t Take it With You), and Sister Hubert (Nunsense).

ALEX MOGGRIDGE (These White Men Are Dangerous, “Usher”), he/him, is delighted to return to Playground. CLAUDIA NGUYEN (Lately, “A”), she/her, is delighted to be a part of the Refuge to Planet Mìn cast. Her recent credits include Linh from Brackish at The Wayward Artist and Meghan from End Titus VDM. Claudia has worked on commercials for Dove and San Diego. She is currently learning how to screenwrite.

MARK PETERS (Lately, “Concierge 2”), he/him, performed last year as The Count in a new translation of Schnitzler’s La Ronde, staged at IRT in Manhattan. He was King Lear in A Fool’s Lear, an original adaptation of Shakespeare’s play at the same theatre. FELTON SPARKS (@RudyMocha has Entered the Chatroom, “Peter”), he/him, is excited to step back into the acting world after an extended break. Off-Broadway: The Ebonic Woman (The Gold Dust Orphans). KENYON TERRELL (Lately, “B”), he/him, is a multidisciplinary actor based in NY and the Midwest.

 

 

 

SHAINA VALLESPI (These White Men Are Dangerous, “Cheyenne”), she/her, is a Honduran, New York-based stage and film actress. She recently graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Studies where she was able to train and embrace all mediums of visual and performance art: Film, Theatre, Dance, Photography, Digital Art, and Filmmaking. Shaina is currently working on fully immersing herself in the professional craft of storytelling through performance. Her most recent work consists of roles on Paramount’s Mean Girls: The Musical, HBO’s Succession, Molli and Max in the Future, and JVN Hair’s Holiday Campaign. Shaina is thrilled to be a part of Playground-NY’s third season!

KIMBERLY VAN VO (I Want to See the Sun Again, “Sissy”), she/her, is a recent graduate of the William Esper Studio Two-Year Professional Actor Training Program. Before trading Toronto for NYC, she studied Theatre at the University of Ottawa, The Dirt Underneath, and The Second City Training Center. Outside of performing, she can be found hiking in the woods, road running around the globe, or baking up a storm in the kitchen.

LAITH ZUAITER (Mercy as a Mother on a Child, “Yishmael”), he/him, is a Palestinian-American, Brooklyn-raised actor/director/writer/producer. He started out acting through The New York Shakespeare Festival as a kid and since has been acting, directing, producing, and writing films and theatre with his friends and family. He makes films under the label, Friendly Stranger Entertainment, a production company started in 2014 at his high school at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts with a team of individuals who were having a hard time trying to find a group of friends to make a film in a 64 hour film festival. Laith got his start in 2007 on a Spike Lee NBC pilot written by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana called, M.O.N.Y and had his on-screen debut alongside, Bobby Cannavale. Laith is the son of actor/producer, Waleed Zuaiter and Joana B. Zuaiter, producer. Laith is currently workshopping Three Sisters playing Andrey at the Actors Studio. Laith has worked immensely behind the scenes, crewing for films such as 20th Century Women, Babylon, Maestro, and A24’s RAMY. Laith is bi-coastal between LA and New York but is predominately based in Brooklyn, NY.

KAYLA AMANI (The Legacy of the Land We Inhabit), she/they, is a director, actor and storyteller born and raised in New York City. They are a graduate of Syracuse University and have recently assisted directors such as Lileana Blain-Cruz and Sarah Hughes at Second Stage and Lincoln Center Theater. Kayla is thrilled to be to be making their PlayGround debut!

JACKSON BRADSHAW (I Want to See the Sun Again), he/they, is a theatre artist and filmmaker based in New York City. Selected theatrical directing credits include Heard it From a Birdie: a Tweet Inspired Musical (Purple Light Productions,) The Apartment on Yucca by Stephen Jared (Premiere the Play,) Rising by Gabrielle Freitas (Dobbins Conservatory,) and Little One by Julia Bilboa (Dobbins Conservatory.) JULIO DOWANSINGH (These White Men Are Dangerous), he/they, born in May 1993, stands as a distinguished Jamaican-American filmmaker and portrait/fashion photographer based in the vibrant landscape of New York City. With global recognition adorning his work in both film and photography, Dowansingh dedicates his artistry to amplifying the voices of the most marginalized communities, whose narratives often remain misrepresented in mainstream media. Driven by the profound intersectionality of his identity as a black, queer, and immigrant artist, Dowansingh crafts narratives that resonate deeply with authenticity and purpose. His debut short film, ‘Louder Than Words,’ has captivated audiences worldwide, amassing over 2 million views and gracing prestigious film festivals across China, Japan, Spain, Los Angeles, Boston, and more. His sophomore creation, ‘Family Affair,’ has not only touched hearts but also earned him multiple accolades for his exceptional directing prowess.

JIM KLEINMANN (Mercy as a Mother on a Child; Co-Founder & Artistic Director), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, and more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

ABIGAIL ROSEN (@RudyMocha has Entered the Chatroom), she/her, is a New York-based director, dramaturg, and producer, and she is the Executive Producer of Playground-NY. PRODUCTION

SARAH GASSER (Stage Manager) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. In the Bay Area, she has stagemanaged for Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre, among others.

PLAYGROUND-NY is the second regional expansion of the celebrated Bay Area playwright incubator and theatre community hub, PlayGround(SF). PlayGround, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s, Los Angeles’ and now New York’s best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 350 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 1,500 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 100 new full-length plays by 60 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 36 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-seven years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Steinberg Awards, Glickman Awards (including 6 of the past 10), Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others. PlayGround received the 2009 Paine Knickerbocker Award for outstanding contributions to Bay Area theatre, 3 BATCC Awards for Best Original Script for PlayGround commissions, a 2014 National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing (founder of the Tony Awards®), and a 2016 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
