PLAYWRIGHTS

ANTHONY ANELLO (Slash/Her)

LORI GOODMAN (Shoop), she/her, is a New York City playwright and is very happy to be in the Playground again with all these wonderful artists. Lori is a member of the Dramatists Guild and New Circle Theatre Company.

STANLEY HATHAWAY (I’ll Remember), he/him, is originally from New York City. I was raised in New York City. I was educated in New York City. I’ve taken Playwriting Classes at HB Studio, and Primary Stages. I’ve been writing plays for some time now. I’ve written a number of One-act plays, and a few Full length plays.

HOWARD HO (Talk Listen Be Clever), he/him, is a playwright and composer. His play RESET was produced at Moving Arts in Los Angeles in 2023. He’s twice been an O’Neill National Playwrights Finalist and twice been featured in the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. His YouTube channel “Howard Ho Music” has over 100,000 subscribers and has been recognized by Lin-Manuel Miranda. His journalism has been published in the LA Times, Entertainment Weekly, Howlround, and American Theatre magazine. He has sound-designed over 50 productions and has twice been nominated for Ovation Awards in sound design. He holds degrees from UCLA and USC.

UMA INCROCCI (What They Say About Us)

REBBEKAH VEGA ROMERO (D.U.C.K.ing Cupid), she/her/ella, is a triracial Latina bruja, performer, and scribe, who resides in her native NYC with her black cat, King Arthur Yoda. Rebbekah has graced stages across America: from Massachusetts (Luisa/The Fantasticks/Cape Playhouse) to Colorado (Martha Cratchit/A Christmas Carol/Denver Center) to Washington (Maria/West Side Story/5th Avenue), as well as in many more productions, readings, and workshops. Rebbekah holds a BA in English from Boston University and is a YoungArts award-winning writer. Rebbekah’s poetry has been featured by Sixfold and Ars. Poetica; is a resident playwright with Playground-NY; she wrote, starred in, and produced the short film “The Question,” a comedy about #DatingWhileMixed. Rebbekah hopes her work will inspire other mixed-race girls to realize “there’s a place for us.”

ACTORS

KAYLA AMANI (Slash/Her, “Jenna”), she/they, is a director, storyteller and collaborator born and raised in NYC. They are a proud graduate of Syracuse University. Recently, they have assisted directors such as Lileana Blain-Cruz and Sarah Hughes at Second Stage and Lincoln Center Theater as well as directed at PlayGround-NY. Kayla is thrilled to be back working with PlayGround for this musical round!

JEN ANAYA (Talk Listen Be Clever, “Lee”), they/them, is a queer Indigenous Mexican theater/music/art/ritual space maker, doula, and energy healer raised on Yavapaiv Apache, Cocopah, and O’odham land. From La Mama to Harvard Art Lab, The Kitchen to Radio City Music Hall, the mountains of Greece to Harpa in Iceland, Jen has been weaving music, theater, art, movement, and healing together for 15 years. A founding member of Constellation Chor, contributor to You Are Here Creations, and 2021 FORGE Fellow, Jen tends to their healing arts practice De Luz Healing, and loves to kick it with the youth at the 52nd St. Project. www.jenanaya.com

SHEILA COLLINS (Shoop, “Marilyn”), she/her, has appeared in numerous stage plays, including these iconic roles: Ruth, in A Raisin in the Sun; Emilia, in Othello; (Duke)Duchess of Birmingham, in Henry VIII; Leonato(a) in Much Ado about Nothing; and Charlotte, in Charlotte’s Web. She’s also appeared in several TV shows: Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, General Hospital, and S.W.A.T., among others, as well as short films, two web series and a feature film. She is pleased to be back on the Playground-NY stage.

GRACIE CONNELL (D.U.C.K.ing Cupid, “Catt”), she/her, is an actor, voiceover artist, writer, Basset Hound Enthusiast, and overall funny-girl based out of New York City.

JULIA CROWLEY (Slash/Her, “Carly”), she/her, is an actress and creator working in NYC and New England. She is originally from Boston and studied drama at Bennington College in Vermont. Julia can be seen in the indie films Artificial (2024), Orphans (2020), and Compersion (2019). She starred as Charlotte in the regional premiere of Hysterical! By Elenna Stauffer, and Jamie in Athena by Gracie Gardner with Thrown Stone Theatre. Past collaborations include Up Next, On The Bachelor, and Plant Play produced by First Kiss Theatre; To Be A Monarch Butterfly at The Brick; Fishbowl with Breaking and Entering Theatre; Titus Andronicus with Belladonna Shakespeare.

KATIE HARDEN (Shoop, “Tammy”), she/her, started show business at the tender age of seven. She modeled for Sears department stores and grew up around musical theater. Katie was blessed to play The Narrator in Joseph at The Academy of Performing Arts, directed by Mark Wilson (BWay/Nat tour: Hair.) She made her Off-Broadway debut in a comedy variety show as well as performed in As You Like It as a supporting role at The Player’s Theatre. Katie originated the role of ‘Katie Winters’ with Seven Angels Theatre and was also in the top 25 at Don’t Tell Mama’s Next Big Act. She has been seen in multiple productions and NYC cabarets and interviews celebrities for her online magazine, Lorette. Also was a guest singer at the Wesleyan University ‘Future Broadway Star’, The Wadsworth, Xfinity Center, The Bushnell, and the Orion Capital to name a few. Selected regional roles: Nancy in Oliver, Maisie in The Boyfriend. Ellie May Shipley in Show Boat, Betty Rizzo in Grease, and Kate Mullins in Titanic. Katie is a proud member of AEA and thanks her parents and her rep The Talent Express for putting up with her. Love to my mom, dad, Evelyn, Ana, and Lorna.

GEORGE HARRIS (D.U.C.K.ing Cupid, “Goldie”), he/him, has performed in Regional Theatre productions and TV since graduating from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York. Regional: Hairspray, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Dreamgirls, Pippin; TV: “She’s Gotta Have It” (Netflix), “Project Runway” (Lifetime Network). A proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. AMY HART NGUYEN (What They Say About Us, “Sam”), she/her, is a Vietnamese/Chinese Canadian actor who trained in NYC at HB Studio and Stella Adler. Her work was recently featured at the Frieze LA Film Award in a short written and directed by Milky Tran. She also studied jazz piano at Vanier College in Montreal and can juggle conversations in English, French, and Vietnamese. Apart from her serious acting studies, Amy practices the art of tarot reading and telling poop jokes to strangers.

SHARLENE HARTMAN (Shoop, “Victoria”), she/her, has been acting, singing, dancing, writing & directing for most of her life. It started out in San Francisco, with a broken collarbone and a lisp. Her credits include: Off-Broadway, Indie Films, Television, Live Industrials, Nightclubs, Commercials, Voice Acting, Skit Comedy, and Rap Songs. But her heart truly belongs to the theatre. Ironically, most recently she’s been having a love affair with film. However, most recently she’s been having a love affair with film. Her latest, LUNCH WITH LESLIE, is currently in festivals, receiving numerous awards. She loves creating a character.

MONICA HO (Slash/Her, “Amber”), she/her, is delighted to join the NY company of PlayGround! She is a graduate of the American Conservatory Theater MFA program, class of 2020. Broadway nat’l tour credits: A Christmas Carol (BroadwaySF). Off-Broadway: In Corpo (The Assembly/Dutch Kills Theatre). Regional credits include The Great Leap (San Jose Stage); The Song of Summer (SF Playhouse); Top Girls (American Conservatory Theater); and The Good Person of Szechuan (California Shakespeare Theater). TYLER KENT (I’ll Remember, “Reuben Rockford”), he/him, is a longtime collaborator with PlayGround on both coasts. Theater credits include Berkeley Rep; TheatreWorks; Kansas City Rep; The Old Globe; & the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. WILLOW LAUTENBERG (I’ll Remember, “Patrice Morales”), she/her, is an actress-playwright-singer. Off-Broadway: What It Means to Be Free (Theatre Row), Spare Rib (New World Stages). JULLY LEE (Talk Listen Be Clever, “Tal”), she/her, is an Ovation-nominated actor and long-time member of COLD TOFU IMPROV, the nation’s first and longest-running Asian American comedy troupe. Jully made her Broadway debut in KPOP the Musical, and most recently worked on a staged reading of EMPTY RIDE by Keiko Green at The Old Globe in San Diego. Up next, Jully will be in the industry presentation of CHINESE REPUBLICANS by Alex Lin at The Roundabout Theatre on 2/15. jullylee.com

SUSAN LY (Shoop, “Deb”), she/her, is a native Houstonian, now based in NYC, and excited to be back with Playground! She has a BFA from SFASU, studied abroad at Rose Buford in England, and in Spain at La R.E.S.A.D., and has performed in various mediums from stage to film. PARIS RUIZ (Talk Listen Be Clever, “The Wolf”), he/him, began acting seven years ago during his sophomore year of high school, developing an immediate love for the craft. He studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute at NYU for nearly four years, and recently performed alongside Academy Award-winning producer Jaime Ray Newman as the lead in a short film titled Kinship, set to release early next year. Paris loves tackling complex and unique characters. He would like to thank his family for all the love and support they have given him: Soy increíblemente afortunado, los amo con todo mi corazón.

ALEX SHAFER (D.U.C.K.ing Cupid, “Gramps”), he/him, moved to New York from the SF/Bay Area in 2018. He is happy to be working with PlayGround again, here in NYC. Theatre highlights in NY include Yehudi in Catapult! at Theatre for a New City, Harry Druggist in The Cradle Will Rock at Theatre 2020, in the SF/Bay Area, Colonel McKean in 1776 at ACT, Dan/Jack in Value Over Replacement with Playground, Michael Flaherty in Playboy of the Western World at Cinnabar, Gaev in The Cherry Orchard at Hapgood. TV/Film highlights include Jacob Ackerman in Law and Order, and Sy in Gone Without a Past.

KIMBERLY VAN VO (What They Say About Us, “Izzy”), she/her, is a recent graduate of the William Esper Studio Two-Year Professional Actor Training Program. Before trading Toronto for NYC, she studied Theatre at the University of Ottawa, The Dirt Underneath, and The Second City Training Center. Outside of performing, she can be found hiking in the woods, road running around the globe, or baking up a storm in the kitchen.

TANVI AGRAWAL (What They Say About Us), they/them, is a bicoastal actor and director. Having studied Directing at UC Berkeley, they started out as a Directing Apprentice for PlayGround SF and are now thrilled to be making their PlayGround NY debut. When they’re not doing theater they can be found fostering kittens, doing puzzles, and eating lots of sushi. Thank you everyone for attending the show tonight!

JACKSON BRADSHAW (Shoop), he/they, is a theatre artist and filmmaker based in New York City. Selected theatrical directing credits include Heard it From a Birdie: a Tweet Inspired Musical (Purple Light Productions,) The Apartment on Yucca by Stephen Jared (Premiere the Play,) Rising by Gabrielle Freitas (Dobbins Conservatory,) and Little One by Julia Bilboa (Dobbins Conservatory.) Numerous acting credits include Here Lies Love (Public Theater), Taylor Mac’s 24 Decade History…(St. Ann’s Warehouse), numerous regional & international credits from the Kennedy Center to the Sydney Opera House. NATALIE GLICK SHALOM (D.U.C.K.ing Cupid), she/her, directing credits include Ichundich – Postlude (Wuppertal); Machinal and Miss Julie (Tel Aviv University); Nothing Serious, The Realm, The Lonely Unicorn, 12 Angry Women, and Bride & Gloom (AlphaNYC); Quarter Life (All Gone Theatre Company); An Impossible Love (The Complete Theatre Company); Echoes (All Gone Theatre Company); The Delirium of Edgar Allan Poe (Bedlam Ensemble); Insurmountable Simplicities (FringeNYC); Plan B: the Musical (Looking Glass Theater). Natalie is a graduate of Tel Aviv University (MFA) and Barnard College (BA).

ANYA JOSEPHS (Slash/Her), they/she, is a writer, psychologist, and director. Directorial highlights include an all-female, queer Much Ado About Nothing (Unlikely Shakespeare Company), the off-Broadway debut of What Is Your Name??, and the City Artist Corps-funded Titus Andronicus. Anya is an alum of Columbia University, UCLA, and NYU, as well as Powerhouse Theatre’s Apprentice Corps and 24 Hour Plays’ Nationals company. When not writing, directing, or working, Anya can usually be found reading an enormous fantasy novel or admiring their cat, Sycorax.

JIM KLEINMANN (Talk Listen Be Clever; Co-Founder & Artistic Director), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, and more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

PRODUCTION

ABIGAIL ROSEN (Executive Producer), she/her, is a New York-based director, dramaturg, and producer. Abigail has experience with new play workshops on Broadway, off-Broadway, and local levels. Follow her career and pop culture blog on Instagram @abimayrose, and on her website at abigailrosen.me.

SARAH GASSER (Stage Manager) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. In the Bay Area, she has stage managed for Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre, among others.

PLAYGROUND-NY is the second regional expansion of the celebrated Bay Area playwright incubator and theatre community hub, PlayGround(SF). PlayGround, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s, Los Angeles’ and now New York’s best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 350 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 1,500 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 100 new full-length plays by 60 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 36 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-seven years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Steinberg Awards, Glickman Awards (including 6 of the past 10), Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others. PlayGround received the 2009 Paine Knickerbocker Award for outstanding contributions to Bay Area theatre, 3 BATCC Awards for Best Original Script for PlayGround commissions, a 2014 National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing (founder of the Tony Awards®), and a 2016 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
